What type of wood is this? Is it good for anything?

My friend gave me a hunk of a tree he cut down. Does anyone know what kind of wood it is? Is it good for anything?

 Elm maybe? Elm makes a great bow...Here's a pic off the internet of elm leaves...

Yes, that's definitely elm of some type.

Looks American to me, but most all elm is good elm.
Only when the last tree has died and the last river has been poisoned and the last fish has been caught will we realize we cannot eat money.
