bamboo backing
« on: December 22, 2013, 06:33:38 pm »
i harvested some bamboo today but i dont understand how to make it flat so it can be glued to my maple. the bamboo is only about 1/8" thick and has the diameter of a golf ball. do i need a larger piece of bamboo to make the right backing? thanks

Bamboo has to be a minimum of 4" in diameter to make a good bow backing, yours is too small.

I buy mine online. If you look for 2" wide "planks" of bamboo, you can find usable stuff.

I can't answer your question yet, but I'm working on something very similar. I got some small diameter boo and split and planed it so I have 2 parallel backing strips, each about 1/8" thick and maybe 3/4" wide. I'm going to try backing a bow with them and if it doesn't blow up (big if) I'll post an explanation/pics.

Local hardwood store.

It's probably no good, kinda like your bow you made, so you better just send all the ipe that's bow worthy to me and tell them to send any shipments of ipe to me  >:D  lol

PM me if you need the tapered bamboo, I do not have it listed on the site right now, only the standard 2" wide slat.  I also have ipe if you can't find any straight-grained pieces locally.    Smooth on epoxy and Dean Torges BBO dvd available too.
