How to waste less superglue
« on: May 20, 2013, 12:35:47 pm »
So recently, I had gotten superglue all over the table.  Parents were, to say at the least, kinda mad.
Said I couldn't have superglue.  But after pestering them for a few hours they let me got me another tube. >:D  This was a "Gel Superglue" from the local Dollar General.
I have only used it once and I have fallen in love with the stuff.  It's like superglue, but you squeeze it out and it's, well, a gel!  It works the same.  It's just not runny, and you waste less, and you make less of a mess.   :D

I have only used half a tube and I've made 3 arrows, and a bow string.  I reinforce every knock, superglue the entire fletchings on the shaft, and then tie them on with hemp string, then add some superglue for more protection.  The stuff is magic.  ;D

I always keep both the gel and the very thin viscocity versions around. The gel won't follow a check/crack in a piece of wood like the thin stuff will... not even close. I actually haven't found it too difficult to keep it off of places it doesn't belong.
Straight wood may make a better bow, but crooked wood makes a better bowyer

Reinforce knots. And finish servings

knots in your bow string?
failure is an option, everyone fails, it's how you handle it that matters.

I make my strings weird.  I take 3 nails, 2 to loop and another to keep the end from coming loose and I just wrap the string up and down it.  Then I tie a knot on one of the strings and then superglue it.  Then I serve the string and then twist the bowstring until it's at the correct length.

Well hey, if it works it works, but remember that knots are weak spots in any rope or string.

Exactly.  That's why I use superglue to reinforce them.

superglue actually makes fibers weaker and more brittle. it only makes it harder to be untied.
At least in my experaice.

I would be very nervous  about using a string  that  depended on glue to hold it together

Yeah there's a reason for endless loop and flemish twist strings.  There's a ton of tutorials online/youtube and it doesn't take long to be able to make a serviceable string.  lately i've done a single loop at top and a bowyer's knot at bottom.

I love the gel type too. Much less ends up on my fingers!
