Lowes
« on: February 12, 2013, 10:05:04 pm »
So i thought i would go to lowes and get some stuff. low and behold, i find myself looking at ceramic tiles, so i decided i would pic up one or two...ok maybe i walked out with 7... anyway. so i wound up with 7 13x13 inch tiles that are all about 3/16- 1/4 inch. (havent measured) they were all super cheap, costing 1.26$ per tile. I think i will be able to get at least 10 big ones or many smaller ones out of each tile. Very worth it in my eyes, especially since im terrible at spalling out and winding up with waste material.

That will make points. Post them when you make them.

Pretty thin for beginer percusion :( But will be fine for pressure flake practice ;D I have made a few points out of  ceramic floor tile that was 5/8" to 3/4"thick. See if I can find a pic. Bob

If you use enough of it, you will find out that not all tiles are created equal.  Some will be more gritty than others.  Some of the best I have seen at Lowes comes in a black and light burgandy box.  Sorry, i can't remember the name on it.

OK, I am going to have to plead total newbie ignorance here, but TILES????  The thinks I have in my bathroom?  Really?  I mean I've heard of using glass from bottles, but ceramic tile?  I am going to go to the hardware store and stock up (just a few).  Does anyone have pictures of some finished tile-work, or can anyone suggest a certain type of tile?  Sounds pretty cool.  Can't wait to try it.  Be well.

Here's a GLASS tile from the 70's that I made a 7" blade from for the Xmas trade. The tile was 12"x12". You learn real quick how precise you need to be using percussion . :)

Hey Ionicmuffin, that's a picture of my 5/8" ceramic floor tile ;D I still have that one around here someplace. It was thick enough that I started with some percussion an thinned the glue lines off the back an left the lighting bolt glaze on the front. Not a real thin point but looks different :o Later Bob
