White oak verses red oak?
« on: February 13, 2013, 01:42:20 pm »
Anybody know how white oak compares to red oak? I got a piece of white oak recently, it is rather brown. I got it to rip backings, but in retrospect the backings are gonna be pretty brown, and not look super appealing I think. Looks just like red oak to me. Is it really as good as hickory in tension? I know about tim bakers tests and how it supposedly brakes after hickory, but does anybody else have any experience?

I dont think it holds a candle to hickory in tension.
Only when the last tree has died and the last river has been poisoned and the last fish has been caught will we realize we cannot eat money.

it's not even close, as far as i'm concerned it makes red oak seem like  poplar, and I've had hickory backers break, never had a white oak break, and very little set with a wo self bow, but all mine have been from boards, but I have used a lot of it, Bub

I would rate white oak a lot tougher than red oak some white oak will have a brown heart wood,,as far as comparing any oak to hickory there is no comparison this opinion based on my many years as a timber feller and  bowyer,
