length of ishi's ash selfbow?
« on: January 30, 2013, 04:03:45 pm »
hi all!!!

I'm making a replica of ishi's ash selfbow and i was wonder was the length stated in the bowyers bible 54 3/16 measured tip to tip or nock to nock??? Let me know if this was a bit of a silly question.

Thanks so much

Darren. PS what weight do you guys think ishi's bow was before it broke???

I havn't seen the tbb with Ishi's bow, but in kroberer's book it shows length width and thickness tapers, plus describes how he measured bows for people

I haven't seen the picture of his ash bow either; however Ishi made a lot of bows for people, and yew was a popular material. I believe the Ishi made bow Dr. Pope field-tested for distance was a 55" (ttt) yew bow.

It is reported, that Ishi's preference was 40 lbs,but it seems that the longer bows, that were made for Pope, were 45lbs.

Then lets say.....between 40-45 pounds  :D

Ishi didnt use a tillering tree with a pulley and bow scale. No one could could know the exact weight and i doubt the fellas shooting them had bow scales out in the field with them either.

the bow pope tested was red yew, rawhide backed, 55" ttt 48# @28"205 yards cast, doesn't say that it broke, Bub
