Twisted Yew Logs
« on: October 05, 2007, 06:49:17 pm »
Hey everyone, Ive been on here about a month reading about everyones bow making. Its been a real education. You all seem like a big family. I have Three logs of Pacific yew about 8 feet long and at lest 2feet in diameiter That a friend gave me to make a bow out of for him. But they are twisted. This is alot of wood that he brought out of the mountains for me so I hope its not firewood. Is there any advise about how to go about this. Iwould post pics but dont know how. Thanks Joel

Maybe the wood could be sawn into thin straight lams ignoring the grain and glued together so the twist and grain even out? This way you could make some nice yew bows, even if not true self bows.
I have some very twisted yew. I split it and cut it into billet length. I am hoping I will be able to join it so that the severe twist is minimised as much as possible and get a bow out of each piece. I won't know until I try but I wish I had had access to a good table saw that could have cut some straight lams.

At the bottom of the window in bold it says ' additional options' click on that.

now there is a new text window that says 'attach:' click on the ' browse' botton on the right side of the text window, browse around your computer to your picture. Click on it once to select it ,and the click 'open' .

Saw them into slats and back with bamboo. That combo makes a terrific bow.

Try to find someone in your area with a big band saw with a resaw blade or a "wood miser" band saw saw mill. Have them cut into slats as others have said.   Pat

make sure after having them cut that you store them properly or they will still twist like pretzels as they dry. peace
