2" wide osage pyramid
« on: September 01, 2012, 01:12:06 pm »
I have a couple of decent osage billets that I'm going to make a takedown from.
I started fitting one of the sleeves this morning, managed to get a decent fit, have to drive
the sleeve on the last fraction of an inch.
I have plenty of wood but don't really think that I need to leave it as wide as 2" though I do like the
look. Frankly I like a bow a little overbuilt for some peace of mind if nothing else....but 2" wide is probably
a bit much.
just looking for 55# at 26".
suggestions ?? comments ??

btw the billets are nearly 34" long so have plenty of length.
will likely cut 'em a bit shorter.

1-1/2" wide is a plenty for Osage. 26" draw 62 to 64" long will work fine. Dean

Don't!
It's easy to loose length (maybe upto 4") when you splice, as there is an overlap, also you may need to adjust the fit, or even recut the splice if it doesn't line up right first time.
Wait til it's at least ready for the tiller.

Del, I'm using takedown sleeves.
And I'm way too cautious to shorten those billets now. I'll probably tiller it as is and decide later
whether to cut 'em.

Be real careful driving sleeves on.  In my experience when I do that the sleeve won't fit properly because the soft brass deforms.  You don't have to worry as much about the steel side.
