What to do with these knots/limbs
« on: March 03, 2012, 12:55:00 am »
I have two pecan staves that are 66" long and roughed out to be eastern woodland bend through the handle type bows.  They both have small branches coming out of the middle of the limb.  What should I do with these?  Can I drill them out and have holes through the bow?  Should I drill them out and fill them with sawdust and superglue?  Can I do nothing and leave them as they are?

Looks like you did all that is necessary. The knot sticking out is no problem and it will give you a place to hang your hat!  ;)

If you want to drill 'em out, drill a hole in the middle of the knot smaller than the knot and pick at the knot collapsing it inward untill its all gne, that way you will keep the surrounding wood undamaged and thus much stronger. Drilling slightly bigger than the knot is ok if you are filling it.

Leave them. Then when the wheel bow guys see it, it might get some of them thinking straight.
Bowmakers are a little bent, but knappers are just plain flaky.
