Arrow shafts?

Just started making some arrow shafts using rock maple... haven't fletched them yet. Are there any other good arrow woods in New England? My only tools are a hatchet and a couple planers and working with rock maple is an absolute hassle!

My favorite shoot shaft has always been alderbrush... Red osier is another great shoot shaft....not sure if it grows near you though....
