Spining arrow without tester or "known spine" baseline arrow

Tenbrook asked me to post this here when I posed the question to him,

I am using your boo arrow build along (awesome by the way), but I have no "known spine" arrows to get a baseline, I am looking for 60-65# spine. Using 2#, how far would you guess the arrow should bend below the plain of the nails for that range? I'm thinking 1-1.5" but it's just a guess. 

He is going to spine and measure an arrow for us and put his findings here.

I meant in the build-a-long thread....

No worries though.  I got 1/4" for a 60-65# arrow.

Remember this is a pretty rudimentary way of doing it and your are only going to get "in the ballpark" without a true spine tester.

.433 deflexion or 60# would be very close to 7/16" (.437) if my math is correct. And 13/32" equals .406 and close enough for 65#.

I think it is something you get the feel for, seems like most bamboo arrows shoot well if in the ballpark but you will still get a few culls, great for gifts or different bows.     kenneth

I had some extra tonkin shafts that were way stiff (about 95# on the tester), but I made arrows anyway for my daughter for 3D. She tends to be rough on arrows at times. She's shooting a 45# selfbow, so I thought they'd fly pretty crappy. She came back off the course later that day and said "Oh by the way dad, those arrow fly just fine out of my bow!" That's what I like about cane/boo arrows.
