Passing it on
« on: October 09, 2011, 06:38:31 pm »
Five years ago (it doesn't seem like it) I helped my middle son and his friend make their own bows. They made a fine job of their silk backed ash flatbows. They shot with me for a while and then school and life meant they wanted to do other things.

This weekend my son's friend came back with a Hickory backed Yellow Balau bow made from wood I gave him back then. With a very little bit of advice from me he finished it off on my tiller. A fine little bow, 45lbs at about 29 inches. Now he and my son are talking about taking up archery again and maybe making more bows.

It's good to feel that maybe, without really trying the love of archery and bow making is passed on.

That's awesome Mark, hope your son and his friend become fellow addicts.

I think the important part is planting that seed way back when. My boys come and go with hunting now, but I think as they age they will revert back to it. The seed is planted, that was my job.
Only when the last tree has died and the last river has been poisoned and the last fish has been caught will we realize we cannot eat money.

Many paths, many destinations, glad the boys had someone to pass along the passion.
Guns have triggers. Bicycles have wheels. Trees and bows have wooden limbs.

That is way cool Mark. I think the passion is in there for most folks but won't surface until the right time for them. I wasn't brought up in an "outdoors" family. I was almost 30 before I started hunting but it was only a few years later is when I started building wood bows. That was over 30 years ago and the passion is still strong. I can't imagine where I'd be today if I grew up with these activities all around me all the time. My addiction is pretty strong the way it is.
