Pride goeth before the tip breaketh
« on: August 26, 2011, 12:18:22 am »
I started another spall tonight.  Got it to a preform pretty quickly, but had a big turtleback on it.

Got the edge turned and knocked most of that off.

Had it just about ready to notch when....

Didn't want to give up on it though, and ended up with a little short point.

It's a little light, but I think it's wide enough to be legal.

I punched the notches and got a long flake on the last hit on that one side.  Interesting...

That is a nice save, I bet you had a few choice words when it broke.  I have broken the tips off of most of mine and it takes alot not to chuck it into the woods.

Thanks guys.  Almost all the stone I have is grey to brown.  Not quite root beer colored but nice none-the-less.  I don't know if it got that color in heat treating or started that way.  I suspect the latter.  Patrick heat treated it.

The tip broke because I overshot a flake on the other side from the picture which made it thinner there then the point or the middle.  There was a hard spot on the edge there too and I was trying to get a nicer edge before sharpening.  I knew better but am just too stubborn.  I really like the little point, might do another one that shape leaving it thicker to get more weight.

I'm not sure how your thinning your tips W/pressure. If it helps, I thin my tip W/pressure but I make them travel diagonally down toward the base. This helps prevent overshots & also helps remove any high spots near the edge W/out breaking the tip.
