Determining brace height?

Just wondering how to determine what brace height to string a selfbow at?  I see some that seem to have a higher brace height than others. I am sure the length of the bow and it's poundage play into this...but where do you start? I am used to glass bows that are around 7 1/2"-8".  Is 5"-6" more the norm with selfbows?

you need it high enough to clear the fletching i put mine aroud 7 or 8  mine gets any lower the string strats hitting my wrist.

Depends what sort of self bow.
I'd say 5-6" for a flatbow 6.5 tops for ELB. Dunno about ALB/AFBs 'cos I aint from 'A' I'm from 'E'  .

i adjust mine so that the bow shoots well
i get none to very minimal string slap on the wrist
most times it comes in at about 5.5"

Same as Salordad. Start out at a given height and then adjust the string longer or shorter to get it shoting good.

AFB  no less than 5" from belly & not more than 7 1/4" From the back for me !!

Clear the fletching and then keep it at the lowest brace height at which good arrow fight is achieved. Jawge

Depends what sort of self bow.

ALB?AFB? ELB?  Is that government or military speak?  Just kidding.  I dunno what that means. 

I string mine to fistmele and instruct first timers to do the same.  mainly because that is what I was taught.  but the feather advice rings true.  good stuff.
