Stave for a bow?
« on: October 18, 2010, 08:54:03 pm »
Living here in northwestern Ontario is a poor place to get any kind of wood for bow building. I have built one using purple heart (my first) and although it shoots fine, it is too light in lbs. about 25. at 28. Any one know of a place here in Canada that sells staves?? would like to get another and try my hand at another build. The cost of importing them from th US. is just too many $. Thanks for the help!! Oldgun, don't you have Elm, Maple, or Oak up that way? If you can find a hardwood mill near your area, you might be able to buy raw logs that suit your needs. I did that here with Oak and got enough for a dozen bows. Plus scored some nice plain sawn boards that I have made a couple dozen bows from. Total cost for log and boards was only twenty five dollars. If you have a lumber mill near you, they would know where someone is milling out hardwood.
