Want to make deer antler field points.
« on: September 06, 2010, 10:55:47 am »
I want to make deer antler field points suitable for shooting into a bag type target. I know I've seen pictures here somewhere so I know somebody can tell me the best way to make them. I'd like to be able to glue them on just like the metal bought ones but if anyone has a better antler field point I like to hear about it. I picked up some dogwood shafts at Flint Ridge and am anxious to get shooting them.

For glue-ons you could probably grind a spade bit down to a 5 degree taper and bore the inside out. The only antler field points I have made were designed with a shoulder to insert into cane shafts.

Progress might have been all right once but it's gone on for far too long.

Thanks Hillbilly! I was thinking since the dogwood shafts have a small pith center of making the antler tips look like modern screw in field points.  I was concidering making "bullets" then gluing a pin into the bone. The other end of the pin then glued into the pith. Don't know if the pin would cause splits in the shaft to occur when shot though, might pop out the side wood?
