wite oak ?
« on: January 08, 2010, 12:45:32 pm »
was thinking of trying a 50" modoc style bow, I've got some white oak board stock and was wondering if it is suitable for this type of bow?

White oak is very good bow wood but I have not made a bow with white oak board. Will you sinew back it?

that's what I was wondering, thinking about 45# @ 24" maybe 26". I know it would be safer sinewed, just don't have any at the moment.

With good grain it should work fine. Give it a try.

it's a very good, straight grained board, no runoff in this piece to speak of, none on the section in question. thank's for the reply, bub

I would use steam on white oak, steam it for at least 40 min. It bends pretty good but works best if you can put it in a jig with a pressure strip. Steve

thank's badger, don't have to bend it to much, just flip the tips abit. once I get it close to floor tiller, I'll get her bent

well, everything was going great, 2.75" at the fades, kind of an eliptical taper to 1" at the tips did some glued on fliped tips and had it bending real nice 50# at 17", was exercising and lifted a big sliver. shoulda backed it like I said but had really good grain, ran some ca in it and think if I narrow the width just a tad I'll lose most of the sliver
