Never quite looked at New York being " basically Canada" before !!!! Hmmmm - we DO border Canada, but the similarities end there !!
There are a LOT of white woods, and I hear scarce accounts of Osage here and there. You should have no problem finding Hickory , or as mentioned Hard Maple, Birch, Ash, some Elm, Service Berry, Oaks, Hornbeam, and others. We're blessed with white woods in NY. Where are you located

I'm in the central part of the state, but the trees we have go right into Mass. and Vt. Northeastern
hardwoods seem pretty generic.
