Just as with hickory or any wood for that matter, some violations are OK, depending on the length and draw weight.

Scott, don't get me wrong, If I was in your boat, with the tools you have available, I would do the same, what do you have to loose.

thanks Dano, and to be honest, i don't mind if some break:  i'm a learner and explorer, so if a bow breaks i try to understand the material by studying the break...

it is damn hard to chase a ring on yew...just too fkn many of em!  I think i'll rough out the staves so that when i get some sinew i'm ready to back a whole bunch at once, in various degrees of reflex and so on...

Sounds like a good plan, I suppose you could get away with building one or two till then ;D
