Can I...????
« on: December 31, 2008, 07:38:35 pm »
I have a bow that I have already put a coat of Tru-Oil on and now I have decided to put snake skins on it. :-\ How long should I wait and what should I do to prep the back for the skins? I will be using Tight Bond III to apply the skins. This is a very thin ringed Osage recurve and I discolored the back a little with the heat gun while bending in the curves. I have tried to sand the scorch color out, but i am afraid to sand to much as I will violate the back ring.
Any help will appreciated.

i would think if you cleaned it with acetone real well, let it dry and clean it again it should be good to go.
never done skins yet,so i could be just talking out of my arse.

well you havent posted your x-mas gift pic(s) as of yet.
i am waiting for others to go first then i'll post my pic(s) of my gift.

I'm waiting also. Don't want my ugly mug to be the first one everyone see's.

I had thought about the acetone too. Just wanted to get some input on it, as I have only done 2 skins myself.

You're fine with the tru-oil on Osage (I use a finish on all Osage bows getting skinned or sinewed). Matter of fact I would suggest putting on several more coats to build up the finish. After a couple days of curing just scuff the Tru-oil to remove the shine and you're ready to glue your skins down. The TBIII will adhere just as well to your finish, if not better, than to the Osage itself. ART B

I think it would have to be some pretty nasty stuff to clean grease/oil better than acetone. Also acetone dries quickly.  They use it in the hospital to take stuck bandages off. I use it as an octane booster. Clean a spot off with acetone and do a test spot with the glue and see if it will dry and stick . If it sticks just sand it off and your good to go. If the oil interferes it should just flick right off with a little pressure from a scraper or knife. Then ya know not to glue it down. My o2

I would scuff up the finish as well as cleaning with the acetone.
