Not for the weak...(Graphic photo)
« on: April 27, 2008, 11:31:36 am »
Been slowly making my nocks smaller.  Reached my limit, at least with this bow.

It was the thin ringed osage I made this winter that I had questioned.

Not really blaming the thin rings but will be leaving nocks a little bigger on the next couple! :-[ >:D

It had really been shooting nice.  Was using it for an indoor trad 3-d league and was still turkey hunting with it. :'(

Lowell, it looks like you had a back nock cut on the bow, thats a recipe for a disaster, on very narrow rips use an overlay and then cut a back nock into that. The bow you have there may be savable. Steve

What everyone else said.   Here is a few pics of a hickory bow with small tips. If you will notice, the string groove is only in the antler tip overlay and not at all in the wood of the tips.   Pat

Well, seemed like I learned something by it breaking.  I thought it was a basket case but now I may learn something by trying to save it!!!

Seems that whatever I do, I'm learning something from all you guys here.  Thanks , Lowell

Took your advice that this one may be able to be fixed.

Glued the split end back together and put on the horn overlay.

Kind of flinched the first couple times I pulled it and shot it but shot  about 50 arrows with it this afternoon .  So far so good!!

Looking at the pictures I see I should have made the overlays as wide as the limb.  Will the next time.

Live and learn!! :-[ Just hope I live long enough!! ;)

I've had a split froma  string, a time or two.  Never on osage, but a couple of whitewoods.  Usually the bow was too high of poundage when I was stringing.  Some of the lighter mass white woods aren't as tough and need the help of an overlay.  Looks like fine work.

I tore the nocks of a bbi once, by making them too light. I thought they looked really good, and I thought I was sooooo smart. First time I brought it to full draw... kablooie!! Broke both the nocks right off!! Live and learn.
