David, There are a few types. The simplest is a length of board with a "V" groove down the center with a stop at one end and a thumb plane. Remove the 4 corners which makes 8 corners. Remove them and sand it smooth.  I'll show you mine when you come to the Camp-O-Rama.     Pat

Thanks Pat!!  Any suggestions of dimensions to start to cut my square stock?  Epi arrows :o!!  Don't know what they would weigh, but plenty heavy.  I have some Osage I am wanting to make arrows out of also.  Thanks, Dave

I have planed quite a few of them down by hand from square stock without using anything but my leg and a block plane. The v-board makes it a little easier. I usually cut square stock at 3/8" and work it down from there. I bet that ipe will have to go down to at least 5/16" diameter to get a usable spine.

What Steve said. I've only worked with white pine and not much of that.     Pat
