Hey, guys.  I was looking in a book I have on Indian artifacts and I found an interesting picture of a cedar arrow box or quiver made by Olympic penninsula Indians and found in 1870.  I just had to try to make one like it.  I went to Lowe's and bought a cedar fence post for $6, cut it off at about 30", split it on the band saw, hollowed it out and carved the wolf image on it.  It hinges open at the head end.  I lined it with black deer hide and twisted hemp cordage.  I painted it with a thin grey acrylic and colored acrylic paints.  This is a present for my good friend Billy Berger who wrote two recent articles in PA.  He makes beautiful arrow and I thought this box would help to show them off.

  I love it Dan and I bet Billy will, too. I have a book with the same kind of boxes also and I've thought of doing it like an alligator since I live in Fl.

Thanks, guys.  Matt, I used a really neat chisel from Lee Valley Tools to hollow it out.  It was a kind of gouge that had an offset handle and a semi-circular edge.  It worked great on that soft cedar.
