Red Oak Recurve "Thor"
« on: November 05, 2020, 11:22:46 am »
Hi!

I've just finished new bow. It's Red oak recurve 70" ntn (following wood surface). The bow is drawing 50lbs at 28". Bog oak overlays and arrow shelf. Natural leather on handle and arrow pass. It's made from stave. Limbs at widest are 2,3". Linseed oil + varnish finish.

All the best!  (-_)

Don’t get to see many red oak staves.  Nice work!

Love how the figure comes out on the sides. Red oak would be a nice bow wood to cut considering how absolutely massive some of the trees get.

Nice bow. Appears you use red oak often and do a great job with it.

You should come to my neck of the woods.  Red oak is one of the few bow trees that can grow up here.

Very nice red oak bow.  :OK  Red oak staves are not the same creature as Lowe's red oak board.
We just had a 24" red oak uprooted in our yard when Beta came through. Fortunately it fell away from the house and truck.

That is a REALLY beautiful bow!  I was just pondering this week about making an oak bow from a stave rather than from lumber.  I haven't tried it nor have I seen too many, but it works so well for board bows.  very nice!

Nice looking bow. What are you using for a string? Seems like it has some stretch to it ...

Cool bow! :)
The only thing I would say is that you should round over the backs edges more.

What is on the limb on the last pic on left side between fade and mid limb? Different growth ring or rawhide? Don’t matter she a beauty. Arvin
