Yep exactly - no boiling or fire or smoke, just the damps of the ammonia. Be sure to have your tube sealed, be careful with ammonia!

Good to know.  Have you ever tried heat tempering after fuming, or is that asking for toxic gasses?

No, I haven't tempered after fuming. But I think it should work. Just let the gasses evaporate before, meaning let the bow sit in fresh air as long as it was in the pipe.
