Moisture Meters??????
« on: April 22, 2008, 03:22:37 pm »
I was looking on the giant auction site at moisture meters and was wondering which ones are the best for the money. They seem to range from 25.00 to 200.00. I know "You get what you pay for" but I'm a tight wad. Thanks for any help.

If yer a tight wad don't buy one. Buy a combination temperature/humidity meter and monitor the moisture and temp
in your storage area, then weigh the stave every few days when it quits losing weight its at equilibrium for the conditions it was stored in.

I bought one of the $25 ones on line. It only measures the surface and only if the moisture is under a certain percent, 7 I think. I "measured" about every piece of wood in my shop, it read 0% on all. You could cut your wood in half and get a accurate reading in the center I think. I ended up sending mine back.

I have the Mini Ligno. 3 Rivers sells it. You want one that goes to a low of 6%. That one does. I wasn't sure I wanted to buy one several years ago. I wasn't sure I'd be into selfbows. I don't regret buying it at all. :) Jawge

Cool calculator Dano, I'll give that method a try. I'm going to cut some hickory this weekend and try my hand at my first hickory bow. (Running low on Osage) Thanks for your help everyone. Thats why I ask, so I don't spend money on stuff I really don't need.
