Silver Birch - 63 ntn - 45#@27"
« on: October 13, 2019, 03:03:19 pm »
Hey Folks
If I hadn't got that wonderful snakey-deflex-reflex birch from b2w I wouldn't have tried that wood. But I couldn't resist this nice character. Did lot's of heavy heat treating on this one - gave her at least 4 or 5 radiator sessions plus heatgun. Also tried that maelming thing with dammar-pitch solved in turpentine; very interesting things going on - really soaks a lot and changes the wood - but can also suddenly set your bow on fire  (-S. the wood now feels somehow glassy after all that heat - hopefully still allowed here. 172 fps max with a 420gn.
Thank you Josh B, Weylin, NorthHeart, Ryan Gill, razorsharptokill, DC,  jeffp51, burtonridr,  straightarrow, Thunderlizard, bassman,  kamil2910, kbear, dantolin for posting your bows recently - I really enjoyed watching!
Cheers

I don't see many birch bows, that is easily the best one I have seen. Nice work.

Lovely countryside you have too.

Thank you Pat B & Hamish  (-S
First time really examining that tiller: What do you think about the hump in the top limb? Maybe another 4 to 5 scrapes could help harmonizing it...should one do that? My concern always is not to affect the unstrung profile,... taking more set. But the hump is exactly and obviously where i scraped less from that black scorched stuff...just re-thinking  O:)

To me it looks like you could take a few scrapes off just above the fade on the top limb. Maybe a bit at mid limb too.

Well done. Good Speed out of a wood that reminds me of Balsa wood. Light like a feather when it is complete. Is your draw 28 inches, and what is the bow's poundage. My last one was 153 fps at 45 lbs with a 26 inch draw.Wonder what it would be at 28 inches of draw. Paul Comstock had some good things to say about Birch, and it is apparent that a really good bow can be made from this wood as proven with  your example. Good on you.

Nice profiles, I love the look of those RD bows, especially the string angles you guys get from shorter bows.

Forgot to comment on this bow.  Excellent my friend.  R/D's like these are tricky to tiller but it looks like you have handled it very well.   Nice speed!

Havenīt made a birch bow for a year now, when I see how short you can go I wanna make one again and heat treat the hell out of it. But I would go a lil bit longer.
Cool to see a birch from the alps, handcrafted in Swiss.
