I use pretty fresh heated sap and rub it into the sinew evenly. Then rub in charcoal ash till it is no longer sticky but not brittle.

Ok, so I understand correctly Chuck:

1 -you rub in heated sap - so your melting and applying it - OR- your using soft pitch and rubbing it in like bees wax?
2 -THEN you take charcoal ash (or just ground up charcoal?) and rub that into the already applied pitch from the above step until the pitch looses it brittleness?

thanks, just wanna get it right!

basically hes just making pine pitch glue. you want the sap to be hard but not brittle.
