When should you cut Walnut? Does it need to be backed? Found 10-15 different trees and saplings that I could choose from.

cut it when you can get it, you can back it or not, if you search gundoc he's build some nice bl walnut bows

I've only used summer cut BW and used the ring under the bark as the back. I over built that bow and it was probably 45#@28". That was almost 30 years ago. I did make a hickory backed BW heartwood ELB once but it fretted badly.

Its really interesting that I found black walnut here near my house (Croatia). God knows how it grew here as this is not native tree in Europe. Plan to cut it.
