Trade Hunting Points for Osage Bow
« on: October 28, 2016, 12:15:37 pm »
I am interested in trading a set of hunting points made to your specs for an Osage Bow. Knots and crooks are OK. I prefer that it have a little margin on draw length such that my 28 inch draw is not a threat to the integrity of the bow. About 45lb at 28 inch draw, capable of being drawn to 30 inches, no backing, string of your choice, handle wrap of your choice, finish of your choice.

How many hunting points made to what specs would you expect?

I'd say a dozen matched for a good bow.

I would make that trade. Size, weight and style matched. Wt. matches within 5 grains either way of the selected weight.

Oh no, sorry, haha I'm still new to bows, definitely couldn't make one trade worthy yet. I was just saying that's what I've figured for my arrowheads. 20 a piece puts it at about 240 which is a good value on a Selfbow. Most people don't realize what it takes to make arrowheads as good as yours!

I'm a little confused, are you guys talking steel trade points or stone points?

I think $240 is cheap too. I'd never sell a bow I made for that cheap. I probably invest 30-40 hours in each bow, all told. That would be an hourly wage of $6-8 per hour. Not exactly the wages I'd expect for skilled labor.

How many points can be knapped in 30-40 hours. That would seem more of an equal trade.

Myself; I wouldn't trade a bow for knapped points.

Maybe a better trade is just for a stave.

My ponits are knapped from Texas Flint/Chert. I'm not interested in trading a box full of my knapped to match points for a bow. Knapping speed is relative to the knapper's ability, the difficulty of the stone being worked, the shape and size of the stone and how many break before completion. As to how many can be made in 30-40 hrs, you will get answers all over the board, and quality just as diverse.

I expect to be trying my hand at making my first bow this winter or next spring, but it would be nice to have one that I can be shooting in the mean time.
