I burn feathers on the front porch with a breeze blowing.  ;D  Never inside.

Hmm, you would think with that little resistance on w relatively short piece of wire a PC power supply would think it was a short, what keeps it from tripping the safety shutoff? Also I would certainly use the 5v rail if not the 3v, 12v through that little resistance would likely burn up your nichrome or kanthal wire pretty quick.

An electric soldering iron makes a good power supply for a feather burner.

Nice job! Although you could tie your wiring a little neater ;) ;)

I'm a vaper (use electronic cigarettes) and have often though about instead of making a coil in my atomizer making a fletching shape and cranking my device up to 80w or so and burning some feathers, lol. I have plenty of heavy gauge kanthal lying around. I would just have to remember to never vape with that atomizer again, lol.

yeah, i though so too. i was banking on the fail-safe to do its thing, but apparently it's not enough to trip it.

i even built one with a smaller power supply (~maybe 250 watt) and it works just as well. however, on that one, the wire doesn't give the high-pitch whine when switched on. it burns the feathers just fine though.

i will note that on both of the burners, the stainless piano wire does not get 'red' when the element is on.

i would imagine that to be unpleasant.

thanks :) hah hah. i had every intention of doing that.

80W? I'm unregulated at about 105W  >:D Dual 3 mm 5 wraps with 20G Kanthal.

the power supply I am planning to use has a onboard switch, do you think I still need another?

^^ Probably not if it fires up without anything attached. But note the green wire in my photograph. That is the switch wire to power on the power supply. This usually gets the signal from the mother board. It has to be connected to any of the black wires to be "on".
