drum tumor

I commercially fished on the east coast of canada for 7 seasons and I never saw anything like this.i caught this today in the red river north of winnipeg manitoba.very gross indeed!

In warmer waters I guess stuff that causes problems for fish is more prevalent. We see  all kinds of weird stuff on fish in the south. I think we would see more but if a fish is seriously impaired in the food chain it does not last long and it usually can't be caught on lures because it is not feeding. I would think folks that catch fish in nets or baskets would see more of this kind of thing.

That looks like an Erie sheephead from 20 yrs ago. The tumors seemed to disappear after the zebra muscles cleaned up the lake. Drum have a tenancy to form tumors without much irritation/pollutants. That may have been a result of a previous hook puncture. Lamprey eel scars usually result in a nasty tumor for a drum as well

  Fun to catch, but I'd starve before I ate one.

That's a shame. What the greedy have done to our waterways is discusting.
