Need Help
« on: May 08, 2015, 01:23:42 pm »
Alright so I was on here several months ago when I made my first red oak board bow. That bow was so weak that I just trashed it. I have a board bow in the process, a flat bow. But what I want is a nice primitive bow. My main question is what would be the easiest bow to make? I'm thinking a long bow, but there's easier ones let me know. I would really like to have a bow with. 40-45lbs at 28" so that I can eventually hunt with it. Is there any good tutorials for making a long bow? I have access to a few different types of oak, as well as cypress. I'm in nc and I'm sure there's more usable trees, just haven't found them. Thanks for any help. I do have one cured piece of oak but I'm not sure what to do With it as it's probably around 65".

I'd go with  Sudbury bow. An early Native American bow.  They shoot sweet. Wampanoag people.

I have made them from hickory boards. I think they are one of the easiest.
The hickory staves the Rudder Bows sells lends itself real good for them.

I think I'm gonna stick with boards for awhile until I can really get the hang of it. Will red oak be alright for a Sudbury or is hickory better?

I'm guessing a 1x2" should do it?

There's plenty of how-to's on the Internet,  along with detailed construction plans. Check out the build along section of this message board. The book Traditional Bowyers Bible volume 1 will also answer all of your questions.

I'd go for a simple sapling bow. Those are semi-pyramidal by nature. They require little work, the stave is easy to get and dries within reasonable time.
