Dick has been my hero for many years. He did what so many people my age wanted to do. I have both of Swerers(sp) PBS shows on my PVR and watch them 3 or 4 times a year. Good stuff!

He wrote a book "One Man's Wilderness: An Alaskan Odyssey" that was offered as a bonus from PBS. Our library has a bunch of copies. Good read.

     I have that book, and saw the pbs show.  Excellent indeed.  One of the pictures in the book, shows mountain during the winter, and one side is covered in ICE!  Brrrr, don't think I would want to winter there!  He said why he went back to civilization to live with his Daughter in I think Seattle was that he was no longer able to take the cold.

I laughed in the first PBS show when he came back to the cabin and it was a nice warm 40f. I used to keep beer at that temp. It's all relative though. I guess it felt warm when it was -40f outside.

The show said he lived up there nearly 30 years. Alone. I would like to try to build the house, and do the things he did, and maybe stay up there a few months at a time. Definitely would like to over winter, but I can't imagine living up there so isolated and alone full time. It didn't look like he had many books or anything. I would get a little loopy, or a little more.

I'm definitely not trying to belittle him (he is my hero) but his book seems to indicate that he came out to civilization more often than the PBS show lets on. He liked the winters best, probably because there was no mosquitoes.
