Central California Burning!
« on: July 27, 2014, 03:54:36 pm »
El Portal near Yosemite -

Well - it seems that the power company dropped a hot line while repairing a lightning strike from last week. Fire went from ignition to 500 ac in 2 hours. 2100+ by around 10 pm. They have called in the DC 10 retardant dropper. Lost one house for sure - a co-workers. Closed hwy 120 from Crane Flat to Yosemite Valley. Still burning away! Around 100 degrees on the line with erratic winds in front of a storm front coming in. Try Inciweb.org or Yosemite Fire on FB At this time I do nor have any further details.

To the north is the Sand Fire in Amador county. Fire is still going good too!

Prayers for Firefighters and those with homes in danger and those whose homes have been lost! Many thanks to all of you in the PA community and for the support you offer to those who you may not have shook hands with yet!

God bless and watch over those red card carrying fighters.  Keep your eyes on the black, heads on a swivel.
Guns have triggers. Bicycles have wheels. Trees and bows have wooden limbs.

Fire is just over 3000 acres now. Two confirmed structure losses. 19% containment. Sikorskies, Bells, Bombers and a DC10 bomber! Another fire south of Yosemite Near a place called Mammoth Pools. Lots of smoke in the Sierra!

I've been keeping up with this on the news, Ben. They say some giant sequoias are in danger. You guys need a few days of nice set in rain. I wish I could send you some.

Right o Pat! Put some of that rain in a jar and ship it out! It is headed toward the Merced grove in the park. This area was threatened by the Rim Fire of last summer so it was prepped so impacts should be minimal. There was some good rain about 6 hours north. we got some drops yesterday but that was all.  Fire is over 4000 acres but all the roads are open now. Smoke was really not bad this morning. Hopefully they are getting a handle on it.

Well - good news!

The El Portal fire is 89% contained as of this morning with no new growth. We are expecting some showers which will help. The Merced river is only 17cfs from the lowest historic lows. Lower watershed temps are at trout kill levels. Still have an Osprey hangin out in the river Canyon. many of the waterfalls visible by road are either dry or mere trickles. If y'all got rain send it this way!
