Minimun length
« on: June 02, 2014, 09:16:37 am »
Hi guys.

I want to make a bow for my wife`s sister.
Her draw is about 24" and I plan to make it light- 25#.
I have a white oak board, straight grain, 2" wide and 56 1/2" long.

Is this board long enough for this draw length & weight?

Thx

Dor

Is it going to have a stiff handle or bendy?

With a good tiller it should be fine/stiff or bendy handle. I usually figure for a minimum double the draw and add the handle and fads. That seems pretty safe.

It seems a little sketchy IMHO. Go pick up a red oak board longer. If the bow was for you I'd say I'd go for it. But I wouldn't wanna hurt anyone else. I wouldn't mind being hurt for the experimenting of my skill. If that makes sense.

I believe its long enough. Two things you can do for smaller folks with smaller hands to reduce length. Make your handle 3" long and each fade 1.25" long. That leaves plenty of wood to make a 25#, 24" bow. Don't leave it 2" wide, it'll end up 1/4" thick if your lucky. Id suggest 1 5/8" wide or so.

Plenty long enough. Do as Pearly says. If you have trouble reducing weight, tiller from the sides and bring the width down some.

Should be but I would let the handle bend. 1 3/8" wide. No narrowed handle. Jawge

This bow did just fine ~35#@24" and it's only 44" long.

50#@26"

Might as well make them short, save some wood to keep warm.

Well, I measured her draw length today, and it`s 22" tops!
so I`ll give it a shot... nothing to lose...
