Can I write over poly?
« on: August 01, 2014, 01:25:45 pm »
Got wipe on poly finish on and need to sign bow. What, if anything, is good for writing over this?

Thinking of sanding first a little, thin layer shellac, sharpie, then wipe poly over again but not sure.

What you think?

I've had better luck with sharpies, then spray a mist coat over the sharpie. Last time I tried to wipe or brush on poly over the sharpie, it smears it a little bit.

At Walmart or other craft stores they sell different tipped paint pens. From fine to fat. A bunch of different colors. Works great and just poly over

I use a fine tip sharpie, but be careful the only thing I have found that works to cover it without running is spray on poly.  Shellac or trueoil will make it run.

Put a coat of water based poly over the sharpie and you will be fine.

I use India ink and a nib or quill pen. I usually use Tru-Oil with a spray of satin poly first, then write then Try-Oil over that. Once dry, India ink won't smear with any finish.

When you spray Poly on it just mist it to start with. After you get a coat or two misted you can go to town spraying.
