Question about finishes.
« on: January 01, 2014, 07:34:59 pm »
I have been messing around with different finishes, trying to fond one I like. Currently I am working on a 16x20x1.75 end grain cutting board made from rock maple and walnut for my wife's birthday. I am not sure what would be the best way to finish it. I started off by washing it down with acetone then need to pick a finish.

I was hoping to be ale to use something I already have, so any idea what would be best:

Formby's Tung Oil
Watco Danish Oil
Bullseye Shellac
Hunk of Bee's Wax

Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Any of those will work as a finish.

Cutting boards need food grade sealer. Check out walnut oil or salad bowl finish.

Mineral oil or " John Boos Mystery Oil" work great on cutting boards.

I guess I skipped over the cutting board part.  :-[   You need food grade finish for that.

A mix of need wax and mi.eral oil is a good safe finish used on wood, soften the wax and mix in the oil till it is a workable consistency, run it in and do several coats
failure is an option, everyone fails, it's how you handle it that matters.
