Boo back question

Hi,

When backing with bamboo, should I sand down the outer layer of the bamboo, or leave it intact?  I'm tempted to sand it down for aesthetics, but not if it compromises the integrity of the boo.

You can sand the rind off the outside -  the waxier stuff.  You don't want to sand the nodes too much.  They'll give way.

I asked the same Q a while back when I did my first and only boo backed bow (so now, I are be an expert b'aint oi?  ::))
The consensus seemed to be use a scraper, or fine sand paper /wet or dry paper to take off the rind. Just take enough off to get it clean and don't over do it on the nodes.

Scrape or sand (80-120 grit) the waxy layer off until you reach the streaky fibers underneath. Careful around the nodes; leave them raised.
