Thanks for the clarification DarkSoul. Had never heard of false heartwood until now, I'll need to look into it.

Hickory,Ash  and Elm are good for that! The darker colour will sometimes run diagonal through several years growth. Not a good indicator of heart and sapwood. Seen more when in board form. Yellow Birch does some crazy stuff like that too. Beautiful patterns in the veneers though.
