New Knife
« on: February 01, 2013, 01:57:12 am »
I got this forged blade from Ifrit617(Jon) in a trade. I think Thomas forged it. Anyway yesterday I decided to add the handle. I used a piece of locust I had laying around. I guess you'd call it a partially hidden tang.  ???   On the bottom side I filled in the void with a sliver of ipe and on the top where the tang is exposed I did my first bit if file work. The overall length is about 7 1/2" long, the blade is about 3 3/8" and the shank is about 2 3/4". I used 2ton epoxy and brass pins to secure the hande.
Here is the blade as I got it...

...and now with a new handle. I'll be making an oil tanned leather sheath for it soon...

...the bottom side with the ipe filler...

and the back with the file work...

Thanks guys. I like putting these knives together. Now I need to learn to forge them. I'll add that to my ever growing list!  ;D

Hey Pat,

That turned out really nice. It looks really periodish to the early 1700's or so. Love the file work you did on the tang. Glad it worked for you. The one I finished up from another blade tom sent me of the same steel is scary sharp.

Jon

P.S. I've been wanting to start forging too, if i ever find an anvil, its moving to the top of my hobby list.

I like it. thats a really great carving whittling all purpose knife,
blacksmithing for me, has also been one of those interests waiting on the back burner.
when i'm working on things my ancestors worked, singing the songs my ancestors sang, dancing the same dances, speaking the same language, only then  I feel connected to the land, THIS land, where my ancestors walked for thousands of years...
