Hey Everyone,

For all you osage pro's out there, when you bring the back down to one ring, do you leave an "island" of the ring above it around pin knots? As I typically work white wood, I'm not really sure. I've only made one osage bow, and it ended up lifting a small splinter at a pin knot after a few thousand shots, and was wondering if this was because of my failure to leave this island around the pin knot? Talking purely about unbacked self bows. Any input would be welcome. Thanks.

I don't. I'll chase the ring all around the pin knot. A broken pair of scissors is great for detailing around a pin knot.

I'm far from an osage expert but I did like OO and chased it right down to the ring and left a little around them because they were on the edge.

I do what Weylin did. No extra wood on top the knots. Extra wood around the side or on the bottom is a different story.........

Here is one I chased around with the drawknife and scissor point. I'll take some sandpaper and nock it down a little. When finished it will be a small bump. If its is on the edge I'll leave a little extra width around it.

No Islands. I work around them with a pocket knife and get them clean. Ditto Osage Outlaw.

Okay thanks guys. Clint I finally got around to taking that great stave I bought off you down to one ring, and just wanted to make sure I didn't screw up around the minimal amount of pins that are in it. Thanks for the advice guys.

I do as the others. I do leave an island around any knots as I find a back ring and come back later to gingerly remove the islands. That is 2 different mind sets for me.

I do the same as Pat. Island them out as I go and then come back and clean them up when I am sure the rest of the stave is where I want it to be.

I have left islands of rings around knots twice before. Both times, the extra rings I left on top delaminated at full draw, pulled the wood under them up and broke the bow. NEVER leave islands of extra rings.

I don't do anything special to any knots.
If your worryed barnish your bow.

Do you start your islands as soon as you see the pin knots or do you start that say after the sap wood and all is off?

Depends on the knot,it is really easy to cut through many rings if you aren't careful,the growth rings will usuall get really thin in the knot area.Most of the time after the sap wood is gone to answer you question,just be careful not to tear it out or you can go through a lot of rings as well. If I see a tear starting I just move in front of it and get it gone before moving on.
