Backing strips or staves?

Just cut this nice 72" sugar maple log and it split beautifully straight. My question is would this be better for staves or backing strips? I cut it thinking backing strip but now I'm not as sure. Maybe some of each? I will say the main reason I was wanting some maple backing was to pair with cedar, I think the light color and fine grain would pair well aesthetically with ERC heartwood. After getting the log I noticed that I will not be able to get wide enough strips quarter sawn for backing with only sapwood so I'd have to go with something else. Has anyone ever tried joining two thinner strips together to get a wider backing? Would that work? Any input would be great

Or try both. Luckily enough, you have two halves...
I'd imagine that the side-by-side strips would work if joined well, but I'm a newb here.
