Wildkat Obsidian
« on: August 18, 2012, 08:52:27 pm »
Wildkat sent me a box of rock, in it was a beautiful chunk of obsidian.  My first swing at spalling it resulted in this:

It has some pretty red in it, with the flash on it shows up better.

I started with the long narrow spall and made a little knife blade.  Then I took the larger spall and made a point.

I stepped it just a touch and left a little cortex on the blade.  It's some good stuff.  I think I'll haft the blade to a little deer antler I have and send them both back to Colorado.

If you have to pull the trigger, is it really archery?

I sure like obsidian! You did well, and especially like the side notch! My problem spalling obsidian after other rock is that I shatter/crush too much material. Guess I need a rubber billet 8)

Thanks guys, I normally crush it too.  That's why I was so surprised to get 2 spalls in one swing and the first one at that.  I had a nice thin notch going and then it broke out a little of the edge above the notch.  The second notch was better but I had to make it match the first one. :'(  Pretty stone and as always, it cut me up working it.

nice job G.  I've been enjoying spalling for the first time lately.  Not doing it for the first time, but enjoying it for the first time.  ;D  dpg
