Red oak bow. First build
« on: April 25, 2013, 09:20:27 pm »
Hello all-

First post!

Last year I was given the opportunity to learn how to build a bow by a bowyer friend of mine. He showed me more than i could remember and it was quite the experience. Months later, I finally got the urge to try my hand at a red oak board bow. Below is the third attempt, first two suffered chrysals. This is my first actual bow that I built by myself.  Unfortunately I don't think I can stop now!

71" ntn 30# @ 29". Shelf cut to 1/8" before center. Deer antler overlayed nocks. Cotton sheet backing. Wheat penny inlay. Her name is Penny and she is a smooth shooter

Hopefully attachments work

Nice job!! :)
For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.

Nice finish work, the horns look awesome and the wheat penny is a nice touch

Thanks for the king words gents!

Already blew up an bboo (big knot swirl popped out) but it was the worst of the boards I freed from a large slab. Been busy gather tools. Drawknife, spokeshave, and some amazing carving files.

Working on a maple board now that looks promising. Think ill be moving on to staves as soon as I can source some.

Having trouble finding info on mesquite bows. I'm in south tx for the weekend looking for gobblers so I may cut down a nice tree if I can find the time
