And if you have a mind to make some dye for fabric in the brown/grey color range, save some of that bark. Fill a pot with all she will hold, top with low mineral content water and let 'er set a few days. Then boil it for a good long time, strain out the chunks when it is down to about 25% of the starting volume.
Makes a really good dye for cotton/linen fabrics. The dye does not flouresce in UV light and it blends with any background when deer look at it. Many modern dyes, including those used in camo, have UV enhancers to look better to our eyes. To deer they look like lit up strip joint signs!
