beginning knapper making boppers
« on: April 16, 2012, 10:56:04 pm »
Here is the tool I had a friend of mine that is a machinist make for me.  It is a steel rod with a dome and a round ring.   The three are put together and pressed in a vice.   It could not be easier.  Then fill half way with lead after it cools use a 3/8 socket extention and hit the lead to expand into the copper then jb weld to handle.  Handles are made from dowels.  And that is the simple way to do it.  You cand make 82 arrowheads before it needs to be replaced. I know I made 82 arrowheads with a new copper bopper and a hole formed in it.

Nice setup, you could make a few at a time and have one for home ,one for work and one for the truck.Try one without lead you might like it.I've been unleaded for a few years,I guess it's whatever your comfortable with.

Nice tool. Here is a tip to secure the lead to the cap. Forget about roughing it up or trying to flux. Just take a 1/2 bolt and use it like a punch on top of the lead once it has cooled enough to be solid. This will swedge it in the cap and it will never come loose. So simple a cave man can do it.

Pour yourself some hot lead about 1/2 " inch from the top and glue a dowel rod that fits and go to town.

Here is a pic of a seated lead filled cap. This lead will never come loose.  Mike
