Deflex bows

Anybody build deflex bows? Not reflex/deflex....just deflex??

Some Native Americans used deflexed bows. Probably because their bow wood(or at least certain bow woods) wasn't quite up to snuff.

Thinking composite wood/wood deflex bows? I would think they would shoot sweet, only a guess never done it. Most of the time we talk about string follow, and that is not looked at in a good way. I would suspect a properlly designed deflex bow would be a interesting project. :D

The only reason I can think of to build a deflex bow is if it is going to be strung for long periods of time.

I was just thinking of a deflexed bow design on a walk today, looking at a lower bow branch of a redwood.  Thinking maybe the lower, compression side of the branch (which would be a naturally deflexed bow) of the branch, would yield a zippy deflexed bow, if properly designed.  Thinking a short sinew-backed bow. Short being the key, like <40" short, since you are already deflexed you want to really pull on the limbs to get the sinew involved.

Get a deflexed branch (compression wood), get to a good floor tiller then heat treat into reflex apply sinew. Best of both worlds with no deflex in sight!
Only make a deflexed bow if you've got junk bow wood. It will be slow. ;)

I sweat some deflex in all the kids bows I build !
several reasons but mostly safety and ease of use

also something I have not done in years but deflex built into a bow can give you a longer draw to length of bow ratio so its used for making shorter bow !
