Standing rings in hickory? (quartersawn)
« on: November 19, 2011, 04:31:10 pm »
Im trying to get the most out of a hickoryboard and no matter how i measure and try layouts i get a scrap 3/4" left.
The board is around 1 1/2" thick so it could make a bow that way if hickory can take it.
So is there a reason not to make a bow from quartersawn hickory?

You aren't inventing a brand new wheel, it's been done.  I actually prefer quarter sawn for hickory board bows, I think it takes less wood to make poundage.  On the other hand, it's even MORE susceptible to humidity changes because more of the open grain is exposed to the air.  I think rawhide backing will help cut down on moisture uptake, but then again, that's just opinion again.

Go for it and I think you will be happy with your results.  As always, post pics!

Actually I feel like I am responsible for doing both...helping newbies and then going home to my own bowshop and doing something stupid!

For example, today I built an owl house for my western screech owl.  It looked great but needed one more nail from my brad nailer.  So I punched that nail right thru the wood into my thumb.  Mission accomplished.    ::)
