Red or White?
« on: September 26, 2011, 07:07:10 pm »
Is there any way to tell if a stave is red or white mulberry?  I have only worked with ONE stave of mulberry, everything I have read and heard says it is very similar to osage.  I noticed when I was making the bow that the wood seemed to be about like sweetgum, very light for its length, and the rings are very wide, summer wood is 1/8th thick.  The winter rings are very thin, about 1/32 inch thick.  Or have I just got a red mulberry from the coastal area with a really long growing season?  I don't know where the stave came from or anything else about it, I got it in a trade.  And I know that a picture would help.  It is not quite as yellow as osage and it is darkening nicely as I shoot it.  It made a good bow and it has held together for several hundred arrows which is pretty good for the bows I make, they usually go kaboom.  Bill
